Suffix Prefix Exercise for JSC

What are Suffix and Prefix?

It is a process of making new words from a root word by placing some letters in the beginning or at the end. Some parts of speech (pronoun, preposition, conjunction, and interjection) are not inter-changeable. But other parts of speech i.e. noun, adjective, verb, and adverb can be interchanged by adding suffix and prefix.

Prefix: Pre (before) fix  = that which is fixed before a word to form a new word.  So, the letter or letters that sit before a word to form a new word is called prefix.

  • Un + common = Uncommon
  • Dis + honour = Dishonour
  • Mis + behave = Misbehave
  • In + complete = Incomplete

Suffix: Suf (after) fix = that which is fixed after a word to form a new word.  So, the letter or letters that sit after a word to form a new word is called suffix.

  • Slow + ly = Slowly
  • Blind + ly = Blindly
  • React + tion = Reaction
  • Help + ful = Helpful

Making opposite word by adding prefixes:

  1. Dis + agree = Disagree
  2. Dis + allow = disallow
  3. Dis + honest = dishonest
